The official lineup for Lollapalooza 2014 has been announced.  Eminem, Outkast, Kings of Leon and Arctic Monkeys lead a list of more than 130 bands and DJs that will hit the stages August 1-3, 2014 for the 10th year at Grant Park in Chicago.  The large and medium font bands are heavy on repeat Lolla acts which will draw some criticism but the vets are bands that you should not complain about seeing again. Past breakout artists Foster the People, Cage the Elephant, Young the Giant, Grouplove, Manchester Orchestra, and Fitz and the Tantrum will likely graduate to larger stages.  But if you really want to experience this great festival be prepared to get there early each day as the real strength of the lineup comes further down the list.  Grab your magnifying glass and look at the 6 point font for the great list of up and comers, many of which have been included in recent TheSystemOfSound.com Mixtapes.  Highlights include Bear Hands, Parquet Courts, The So So Glos, Bleachers, Nonono, Kongos, Jagwar Ma, Kodaline, RAC, Royal Blood, and Warpaint.   No real surprise bands or reunions this year but I am excited to see a rare U.S. appearance by British indie rockers, The Kooks.  If you want to take molly, wear a pink tutu and flail around “dancing” like a maniac then you will not be disappointed by the EDM lineup on Perry’s Stage which includes superstar button pressers Skrillex, Calvin Harris, Zedd, Krewella, and Sebastian Ingrosso.  Good luck finding tickets if you haven’t already purchased them as the 3 day passes sold out before the lineup was even announced.  3 day VIP passes are still available and limited 1 day passes go on sale today.  See you in Chicago!

Lollapaloza 2014

A couple days late on sharing this but the 2014 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival lineup has been announced.  Tickets went on sale today for the annual festival taking place June 12-15 in Manchester, TN.  Always one of the most eclectic festival lineups, this year will not disappoint.  Headliners include Elton John, Kanye West, Jack White, Lionel Richie, and Vampire Weekend.  Move a bit further down the list and you get festival circuit veterans Grouplove, Fitz and the Tantrums, The Flaming Lips, Cage the Elephant, and The Naked and Famous.  Bonnaroo tradition continues with multiple Superjams including an EDM jam with Skrillex and the always exciting mystery jam.  Other highlights I found digging deeper include Robert Delong, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Ice Cube, Warpaint, Ms Mr, Polica, The Bouncing Souls, Vintage Trouble,  and Lucero.  Grab your tickets now as they sell out fast then pack your camping gear and head on down to The Farm

Another Festival announcement.  This time of year is so exciting.  The Hangout Beach, Music and Arts Festival lineup has been announced for May 16-18, 2014 in Gulf Shores, AL.  Haven’t attended this one before but have to look into it this year.  What better place for a festival than the beach!  Starting to get an idea of what the festival circuit is going to look like this year and this one is pretty standard.  Not saying that it is not a great lineup, just no big surprises.  Good to know that Outkast is going to do the circuit this year so there is no need to deal with the craziness of Coachella to see them.  Also looks like Jack Johnson and Queens of the Stone Age are going to be at it all summer.  And you can never go wrong with The Black Keys and The Killers to round out the headliners.  Looking further down to the medium sized print Fitz and the Tantrums, Portugal. The Man, Flaming Lips and Capital Cities always entertain.  Then we get to the small print which is the most exciting for me.  I would definitely arrive early to see Amos Lee, Bastille, Black Lips, Bad Sun, and RDGLDGRN.  Finally, DO NOT MISS Robert DeLong who blew me away at the Life Is Beautiful Festival in Vegas last fall

Hangout Festival Lineup

The lineup is finally here!!  Vegas Seven Magazine just revealed the lineup for the Life is Beautiful Festival to be held October 26-27, 2013 in Downtown Las Vegas.  Headliners will be Kings of Leon along with local superstars The Killers.  Great job of supporting the local music scene by also including Imagine Dragons, up and comers Same Sex Mary, Rusty Maples, The Dirty Hooks, Kid Meets Cougar, and many more.  My personal highlight….Living Colour who I had been anxiously awaiting announcement of after a cryptic, teasing post on the Life Is Beautiful Facebook page mentioned the lyrics “Memories Can’t Wait”.  Yes I’m old.  I first saw Living Colour in 1990 at the Tower Theater in Philly.  Read a review here

Music festival fans in Vegas have been waiting anxiously for the lineup announcement for the inaugural Life Is Beautiful Festival in Downtown Las Vegas October 26-27, 2013.  Well we may not know who is playing yet but we do know that we will find out on June 4 as teased in the below video posted on their YouTube site.  We do know that there will be more than 50 bands ranging from past festival headliners to up and coming national acts to local favorites playing at various locations surrounding the historic Fremont St.  Knowing LIB festival founder, Rehan Choudhry, and Head of Music and Live Performances, Craig Nyman, you can trust me when I say that you will not be disappointed.

If you’re like me and don’t want to deal with the craziness of Coachella you can stay right here in Vegas and catch some of the highlight bands playing at The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas during the Spring Concert Series (I prefer the unofficial name No-Chella) April 10-20, 2013.  Currently 7 nights of shows and 13 bands are booked.  We can only assume (hope) that one more big name (Lumineers? Jurassic 5? Modest Mouse? Gaslight Anthem?) is added to the currently open Saturday of the first weekend.  Show I’m most excited for: Of Monsters and Men with Local Natives.  Great job Cosmo.  You’re giving us hope for a solid summer lineup

4/10 – Phoenix with Mac Demarco @ Boulevard Pool
4/11 – New Order with Johnny Mar @ Boulevard Pool
4/12 – Vampire Weekend with Tanlines @ Boulevard Pool
4/17 – Of Monsters and Men with Local Natives @ Boulevard Pool
4/18 – Hot Chip with Four Tet @ Boulevard Pool
4/19 – Postal Service @ Chelsea Ballroom
4/20 – Band of Horses with Jake Bugg @ Boulevard Pool

It’s difficult for me to call The Mowgli’s new music because I have known them for quite a while as a part of The Collective CA along with my friends and family The Jane Does and D. Hollywood.  Although their debut EP Love’s Not Dead (Listen on Spotify) was released in fall 2012 they are just now starting to break out.  If you’re from the Bay Area you may know their single “San Francisco” as the unofficial theme song of the San Francisco Giants 2012 World Series run.  Soon many more of you will know them as they have been added to the SiriusXM Alt Nation rotation.  Expect to see them fly up the Alt-18 Countdown chart in the next few weeks.  They are playing fun, folk pop at the right time to follow in the successful footsteps of bands like Grouplove, Edward Sharpe, and Ball Park Music.  They also recently released the official video for “San Francisco” and they kick off a US tour along with Family of the Year on March 23 at the Spring Jam Music Fest in Charleston, SC.  Don’t be surprised to see their summer filled with appearances on the festival circuit.  If you want some happy feel good music, support the band by picking up their album and buying your concert tickets now.  And while you’re at it, check out the rest of the great The Collective CA bands.

Check out The Mowgli’s Spring Tour Dates here.  Let’s hope for a Vegas addition soon!

Street Drum Corps is a drums and percussion based performance group that has been described as a Punk Rock Stomp.  Their music is a combination of new punk with street drumming played on various instruments and recycled objects along with some EDM beats (Listen on Spotify)  They are great guys who I had the pleasure of partying with a couple years ago when they were in town opening for 30 Seconds to Mars.  Congratulations to them on finally presenting their new production show “Lost Vegas” tonight 1/26/13 at Vinyl inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Vegas.  They are bringing along special guests Tommy Lee of Motley Crue, Adrian Young of No Doubt, and Stephen Perkins of Jane’s Addiction.  Stay tuned for a review

Dave Grohl has assembled a supergroup of musicians who were part of his directorial debut in the documentary Sound City.  The Sound City Players played their first live gig following the Sundance Film Festival premier of the film on January 18, 2013.  Members of Grohl’s bands Nirvana (Krist Novoselic, Pat Smear), The Foo Fighters (Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shiflett, Rami Jaffe) and Queens of the Stone Age (Alain Johannes) backed Grohl and an eclectic group of music legends including Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty, Rick Springfield, Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen, Fear’s Lee Ving, Rage Against The Machine’s Brad Wilk, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, and Masters of Reality’s Chris Goss.  They played  a 3+ hour long set of classic songs from from their own catalogs plus new material recorded for the Sound City soundtrack.  The Sound City Players have an additional gig scheduled at The Hollywood Palladium following the LA premier of the film on Thursday, January 31, 2013.  Stay tuned for a first hand review as I have gotten hold of a couple tix to the sold out Palladium show.
